SRD declined or need to appeal? Here’s what to do

A practical path when your Social Relief of Distress (R370) application shows declined, pending forever, or keeps failing verification, using official SASSA channels only.

Declined is not the end, but ignore “agents”

Millions of SRD applications are checked by automated systems. Declines are common when data does not match. You may have a right to request reconsideration through official SRD processes. Paying someone on Facebook to “approve” you is a scam, applications and appeals are free.

Start with the SRD grant overview if you need the basics, then follow the steps below.

Common decline reasons

Income or employment check failed

The system may show income, UIF, or other records linked to your ID. If the data is wrong, gather proof (affidavit, termination letter, bank statements showing no salary) for your reconsideration.

Bank account verification failed

Wrong account numbers, accounts not in your name, or closed accounts block payment even when other checks pass. Correct details through the official SRD process.

Already receiving another grant

Receiving certain other social grants can disqualify SRD. Confirm which combination rules apply, do not hide other grants; fix the application type instead.

Identity or contact problems

ID number typos, SIM-swap issues, or an unreachable phone number can stop SMS PINs and eKYC. Update contacts through official channels and retry verification.

Appeal / reconsideration checklist

  1. Read the exact decline reason on the official SRD outcome, screenshots help when you visit an office.
  2. Note the appeal / reconsideration deadline. Late submissions are often rejected automatically.
  3. Collect documents that answer the reason (proof of unemployment, corrected bank letter, ID copy).
  4. Submit only through official SRD/SASSA appeal channels, never through a paid WhatsApp agent.
  5. Keep your reference number. Follow up on 0800 60 10 11 or at an office if the portal stalls.
  6. If unsuccessful, ask whether you can reapply next cycle after fixing the underlying data issue.

Deadlines and portal buttons change, always follow the instructions shown on the official SRD site for your application. Call 0800 60 10 11 if you cannot access the portal.

Pending for a long time

Pending can mean the system is still matching databases or waiting for you to finish eKYC. Complete any PIN/name steps, ensure your phone receives SMS, then re-check status. Use our status checker for convenience, then confirm officially.

Approved but not paid

That is usually a batch timing or bank verification issue, not an appeal issue. Follow SASSA payment late and verify banking details before lodging a decline appeal by mistake.

Fraud warning

Nobody can sell you an SRD approval. Do not share OTPs. Report fraud on 0800 06 01 13. Black Sash and other NGOs listed on our contacts page can offer independent advice, they will not ask for your PIN.

Frequently asked questions

Why was my SRD application declined?

Common reasons include income or bank verification failures, existing grant/UIF records, ID mismatches, or incomplete applications. Read the decline reason in the official SRD outcome before you appeal.

How do I appeal a declined SRD grant?

Use the official SRD reconsideration/appeal process on SASSA’s SRD channels within the stated deadline. Provide documents that address the reason (for example proof you are not employed). AllSASSA cannot submit appeals for you.

Can I reapply if my appeal fails?

Often you can apply again in a later period if your circumstances change or if a data error is fixed. Follow official guidance for your case, do not pay anyone who promises guaranteed approval.

My status keeps flipping between approved and declined, is that normal?

SRD is reassessed regularly. A previous approval does not lock in every future month. Keep phone and bank details correct and check official outcomes each cycle.
