Follow these simple steps to apply for your SASSA grant. The application process is free and you should never pay anyone to help you apply.
Anyone who meets the eligibility rules for a particular grant (e.g. age, income, or disability) can apply. You do not need to pay a cent: SASSA does not charge for applications. What to expect when you apply
You must apply in person at a SASSA office or designated service point. When you arrive, you will be asked to complete forms and hand in your documents. Staff may check your ID and proof of income. Queues can be long, especially at month end, so try to go early in the day. Processing usually takes up to three months; you will get SMS updates. Do not leave your original ID with anyone, only copies are required for the application.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Paying someone to "speed up" or "guarantee" your application. SASSA does not charge, and no one can fast-track your application for money.
- Arriving without the right documents, check the list below and bring originals plus copies where needed.
- Giving your bank card, PIN, or cash to anyone claiming to be from SASSA, real SASSA staff will not ask for these.
