First: do not panic-borrow
Late payments happen for ordinary reasons, wrong day checked, holiday shifts, bank verification, debit orders, or SRD batch timing. Mashonisa and “agents” outside pay points specifically target people who are anxious on these days. Handing over your SASSA card or PIN is illegal and dangerous.
Work through the checklist below, then escalate to SASSA if needed. AllSASSA cannot see your account or release funds.
Step-by-step checklist
1. Confirm which grant you receive
Older Persons, Disability, and Children’s grants follow the published three-day stagger. SRD is batched separately. Looking at the wrong day is the most common false alarm.
2. Check the official calendar and holidays
Use our payment dates page (sourced from the DSD/SASSA 2026/2027 table) and compare with any SMS SASSA sent. Public holidays and system outages can delay access even when money has been released.
3. Check your balance the right way
Try USSD *120*3210#, an ATM balance enquiry, or your banking app. Sometimes the grant is in the account but a debit order cleared it overnight.
4. Verify bank details and card status
Wrong account numbers, frozen accounts, or a blocked SASSA card stop payouts. If you recently changed banks, the update may only apply next cycle, see our bank details guide.
5. Contact SASSA with proof ready
Call 0800 60 10 11 or visit an office with your ID, card or bank proof, and any reference numbers. Ask them to check for system holds, failed deposits, or verification issues.
Special case: SRD batches
If you receive SRD (R370), your payday is not the same as Older Persons or Disability day. Batches can span several business days and differ by person. An “approved” status does not always mean the money lands on the first day of the window. Read the SRD grant guide and, if declined, the SRD appeal guide.
Fraud warning
Nobody legitimate needs your PIN, OTP, or full card number to “unlock” a late grant. Hang up on callers who create urgency. Report fraud on 0800 06 01 13 or email fraud@sassa.gov.za.
When to go to an office
Go in person if the call centre cannot resolve a failed deposit, card block, or identity mismatch, or if you need to update details. Bring ID and proof of account. Find locations on our office locator. For the calendar itself, open SASSA payment dates.
Frequently asked questions
How long should I wait before reporting a late SASSA payment?
First confirm your grant’s scheduled day on the official calendar and allow for weekends/holidays. If funds are still missing a few working days after your grant day (or after the SRD batch window), contact SASSA on 0800 60 10 11 or visit an office with your ID.
Can someone call me and fix a late payment if I give my PIN?
No. SASSA will not ask for your PIN or OTP over the phone to “release” money. Anyone who does is attempting fraud. Hang up and report it on the fraud hotline 0800 06 01 13.
My status says approved but I was not paid, why?
Approval and payout timing can differ, especially for SRD batches and new bank details. Check that your bank account is verified, that you looked at the correct payday, and that there is no hold or review on your file.
Should I borrow from a mashonisa while I wait?
Avoid high-cost emergency loans if you can. See our debt guide for safer options. Borrowing against a late grant often creates a worse problem next month.
