How to change bank details at SASSA

Move your grant from a SASSA card to a bank account, or switch banks, without falling for WhatsApp “updaters” who ask for your PIN.

Why this must be done carefully

Your grant follows the banking details SASSA has on file. A wrong number means a failed deposit and a stressful month. Scammers know this and offer “instant updates” for a fee. Real updates for most grants happen at a SASSA office with your ID in hand.

AllSASSA cannot change your details. We only explain the usual process so you arrive prepared.

Steps that usually work

1. Choose a suitable bank account

Prefer a low-fee account in your own name that accepts SASSA deposits. Compare options on our banks page if you are switching for lower withdrawal costs, but open the account first and get proof before visiting SASSA.

2. Collect documents

Bring your ID, existing SASSA card if you have one, and bank proof (stamped letter or recent statement). If you share a household, make sure the account is in your name unless SASSA advises otherwise for your case.

3. Visit a SASSA office in person

Tell the official you need to update payment / banking details. Applications and updates are free. Keep any reference or stamped copy of the change request.

4. Wait for the next cycle and verify

Do not assume the same month will redirect. After the next payday, check the new account. If the deposit fails, return with proof quickly, see our payment late guide.

Timing around payday

Try not to change details the day before your grant is due unless SASSA staff advise otherwise. Updates often take effect from the next payment cycle. Keep checking payment dates so you know when to expect the first deposit in the new account.

What if the first deposit fails?

Return to SASSA quickly with your ID and bank proof. Ask them to confirm the account number captured on the system. Meanwhile follow what to do if payment is late. Do not open multiple “fix” tickets with random agents online.

Fraud red flags

  • Anyone asking for your PIN, OTP, or full card number
  • WhatsApp numbers pretending to be “SASSA banking support”
  • Fees to update details, official updates are free
  • Pressure to act in the next ten minutes

Choosing a bank

If the reason you are switching is fees or access, compare accounts on best banks for SASSA payments before you queue at SASSA. Find offices on the office locator.

Frequently asked questions

Can I change my SASSA bank details by phone or WhatsApp?

For most permanent grants, bank detail changes must be done in person at a SASSA office with your ID and bank proof. Do not send ID photos or PIN codes to strangers on WhatsApp who claim they can update your account.

What proof of bank account do I need?

Offices commonly ask for a recent bank statement or a stamped bank confirmation letter showing your name, account number, and bank. Ask your branch what they accept before you queue.

When does the new account start receiving my grant?

Changes often apply from the next payment cycle, not the same day. Keep your old access method available until you confirm the first successful deposit into the new account.

Is SRD bank update the same process?

SRD often uses online verification paths that differ from office updates for Older Persons or Child Support grants. Follow the official SRD portal instructions for that grant, and never pay an agent to “force” verification.
