What the Disability Grant is for
The Disability Grant supports adults who have a disability that prevents them from working and who pass SASSA’s means test. It is not the same as the Care Dependency Grant (for caregivers of children with severe disabilities) or the SRD grant.
Amount (from April 2026): typically R2,400 per month. Verify on sassa.gov.za.
Eligibility in practice
- Medical confirmation that the disability prevents you from earning a living
- Means test on income and assets
- Qualifying citizenship or residency status
- Age rules as set by SASSA for adult disability grants
Temporary awards are common when SASSA expects improvement or needs a later review. Read your award letter carefully so you do not miss a review date.
Medical assessment and documents
- ID document
- Recent medical reports and specialist letters where relevant
- Proof of income for the household
- Attend the SASSA-arranged medical assessment when booked
Missing an assessment without rearranging can delay or end your application. If you cannot attend, contact SASSA before the appointment.
After you apply
Processing includes administrative checks and medical findings. Use status check for convenience, then confirm with SASSA. Once approved, Disability payday is usually the second day in the monthly schedule, see payment dates.
Declined? Ask for reasons and whether you can appeal with additional medical evidence. Official help: 0800 60 10 11.

The Disability Grant increased to R2,400 per month from April 2026 according to figures published with the official payment schedule. Confirm your award amount with SASSA.
Do I need a medical assessment?
Yes. SASSA typically requires a medical assessment by a SASSA-appointed doctor, plus supporting medical reports from your treating practitioners.
Is the Disability Grant permanent?
Some awards are temporary and reviewed after a set period; others are longer-term. Your award letter should state review dates. Keep medical records updated for reviews.
When is Disability Grant paid?
Usually on the second day of SASSA’s monthly three-day stagger, after Older Persons Grant. Check our payment dates page for each month.
What if my Disability Grant is declined?
Request reasons and ask about appeal or re-application with stronger medical evidence. Use only official SASSA channels, never pay an agent for a guaranteed outcome.
